No DescriptionWhat is Pannus or CSK?

Pannus, or Chronic Superficial Keratitis (CSK), is an inflammatory disease of the cornea that is most commonly see in German Shepherds, but can also affect other dog breeds.

What does it look like?

Blood vessels, pigment and white blood cells grow into the cornea and can lead to permanent blindness without treatment.  Some permanent deposits of cholesterol and calcium can also occur.

What causes Pannus?

This disease is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body.  The disease is worse in younger animals and with increased UV exposure (like at higher altitudes).  In Texas, we have lots of sun and often recommend UV protective eyewear like Doggles.

How is Pannus treated?

Treatment involves mainly anti-inflammatory medication like steroids or topical cyclosporine, or may also involve radiation therapy in severe cases of corneal pigmentation.
